Weight Training

Strength On Your Terms

Walking onto a weights floor for the first time is the part most people dread, and it's usually the part that matters least once you've done it twice. At Personal Touch Fitness, our weights floor has free weights, racks, benches and machines, and it's open 24 hours, so you can train when the room is quiet if that suits you better. Weight training rewards consistency far more than talent, and it's worth the effort at any age, which is something Charlie demonstrates every week at 50-plus. If you'd rather not work it out alone, a few sessions with a personal trainer will sort your technique first. Call 0438 696 925 to arrange a look around our Salamander Bay gym.

What Strength Work Gives You

Lifting does more than change how you look, and these are the benefits members tend to notice first.

  1. 01

Muscle you keep as you age. Strength work slows the natural loss of muscle that starts in your thirties, which shows up in everyday tasks long before it shows up in the mirror.

  2. 02

Better body composition. Training with weights supports fat loss while holding onto muscle, so the shape of a result differs from what the scales alone suggest.

  3. 03

Movement that holds up. Loading the patterns you use daily, like squatting, hinging and carrying, makes stairs, shopping and gardening feel easier.

  4. 04

Bone and joint loading. Resistance training places useful stress on bone and connective tissue, which is one reason it's widely recommended well into later life.

Common questions

FAQs

It's one of the groups that benefits most, since maintaining muscle and bone density matters more with age. Load and exercise selection get adjusted to suit, rather than the training being different in principle.

No. Building large amounts of muscle takes years of dedicated training and eating for it, and most women who lift find the result is a leaner, stronger shape.

Both have a place. Machines guide the movement, which helps when learning or training around an injury, while free weights recruit more stabilising muscle and carry over better to everyday movement.
